Clara Maass Medical Center Appoints Torres Chief Human Resources Officer


Alfred TorresBelleville, NJ – Clara Maass Medical Center announced today the appointment of Alfred Torres to the position of Chief Human Resources Officer. Torres succeeds James Rowlek who retired in September.

As the hospitals’ chief human resources officer, Torres will serve as part of the hospital’s senior leadership team. He will also work directly with the hospital’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Mary Ellen Clyne, PhD to advance the hospital’s hiring practices, and to ensure that the hospital continues to attract and retains top talent. He will also implement programs to ensure top performance of all hospital employees and practices that will result in sustainable growth and development of the hospitals 2,200-member workforce.

Torres, of Washington Township, is an experienced business leader in human resources and brings to Clara Maass Medical Center expertise in talent management, diversity and inclusion, employee and labor relations and culture change and transformation. Torres enjoyed a longstanding career spanning over 20 years in Human Resources at Verizon Communications, and until 2016 served as Vice President, Human Resources Business Partner for Corporate and New Product & Technology. He recently also led the HR team at Metro-North Railroad. Prior roles at Verizon included Vice President of Talent Management & Development; Executive Director, Talent Acquisition & Diversity; and Executive Director of Human Resources Operations for the Northeast Region. Throughout his career, his work focused on leading initiatives such as alignment of human resource strategies with business services, creating strategies for diversity, and oversight and management of national staffing and recruitment activities and employee branding initiatives.

Torres earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the William E. Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester and an undergraduate degree from Columbia University. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Repertorio Espanol. He is also the Past President of the Executive Board of the Hispanic Support Organization.

Torres is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management, and has been recognized by Diversity MBA Magazine, Top 100 Under 50 Leaders, and by the National Eagle Leadership Institute with an Eagle Leadership Award.
