Letter from the Diagnostic Radiology Program Director
Our diagnostic radiology residency program consists of rotations at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC), a 665-bed teaching hospital that provides comprehensive health care for the region through all major subspecialties. Residents have ample opportunities for direct clinical care, research, teaching, and interdepartmental conferences/lectures. NBIMC is home to the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey, which includes a PICU, NICU, Pediatric Emergency Department, and multiple pediatric subspecialties, giving our residents not only a rich experience during their pediatric radiology rotation but also consistent pediatric radiology exposure on call.

NBIMC is proud to offer the Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway to interested residents. Our institution is currently accredited for one position per residency class. Candidates apply for ESIR in their second year of residency. Completion of ESIR allows advanced placement into the 2nd year of an independent IR fellowship, reducing the total training time to only six years.
The program requires at least eight interventional radiology rotations, one ICU rotation, and up to three interventional radiology-related rotations during the R1(PGY-2) - R4(PGY-5) years. It also requires at least 500 interventional radiology or interventional radiology-related procedures.
Our IR section is staffed by fellowship-trained interventional radiologists, one physician assistant, and a full complement of dedicated IR nurses and technologists. We offer a broad spectrum of services such as interventional oncology (including ablations and TACE), dialysis access work, biliary interventions, genitourinary interventions (including uterine artery embolization), venous thrombolysis (including DVT and PE), and due to our serving a busy emergency department, all manner of emergent embolizations including GI bleeding, solid organ and pelvic trauma. Our patient population is diverse and ranges from patients with limited access to health care presenting with advanced disease to oncologic patients that we follow longitudinally in our dedicated IR clinic.
