NBI Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Our goal is to provide the highest quality education and clinical training through didactic and clinical experience to prepare physicians to become strong generalists to serve the community for a lifetime of practicing the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We are committed to establishing a sense of professional responsibility, integrity and respect within our residency program. We provide residents well-rounded training in all aspects of tertiary obstetrics and gynecology, including the appropriate balance between community-based practice with the social challenges of our population and the high acuity patient care. Our institution and the department are committed to providing outstanding evidence-based care to our diverse underserved patients.

Ryan Raffel, MD,
Interim Program Director

Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology has cutting edge technology, diverse clinical rotations and a warm comradery among our staff to offer residents unparalleled preparation for their careers in medicine.

The OB/GYN Residency Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is a well-balanced educational experience. Our residents care for a mix of urban and suburban patients within a department that provides both primary and tertiary services. By providing them with both practical and academic training and balancing supervision with progressive autonomy, we believe we offer an ideal framework for the education of a house officer in Obstetrics and Gynecology. In addition, our residents are exposed to techniques of clinical research, robotics, and managed care.

We are proud that our residency program offers an experience that provides future OB/GYNs with the knowledge and skills to provide superior patient care as well as providing a sound foundation for further training in the subspecialty areas of Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Urogynecology.

About the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides primary and tertiary levels of care for women in central and northern New Jersey. The Department is composed of 11 full time specialists and subspecialists in obstetrics and gynecology. In addition, there are many voluntary attendings who provide services and utilize our subspecialty expertise. The Department is also home to an active midwifery practice, as well as a core clerkship in obstetrics and gynecology for medical students from St. George’s University, Rutgers University and New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. Additional providers include a certified genetic counselor, a registered dietician, social worker, and registered diagnostic sonographers.

The centerpiece of the department is a fully-approved residency with 16 resident physicians. In recent years, the majority of our graduates have remained to practice in the community and a few have gone on to fellowship positions in Urogynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Our Labor and Delivery suite includes 11 LDRs, 6 triage rooms and 2 operating room suites. Two fully-equipped operating suites and a conference room complete the LDR suite. Our Labor & Delivery unit has eleven laboring rooms along with a separate triage area, two fully-equipped operating suites and a resident conference room. The outpatient facilities are housed within the hospital complex in the Family Health Center. State-of-the-art equipment for colposcopy complements the extensive resources available. The OB/GYN Ultrasound Lab houses five state-of-the-art ultrasound machines with both 3-D and 4-D capabilities.
