Application Requirements

Thank you for your interest in the Rutgers Health/Jersey City Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program. We are an ACGME and AOA dually accredited program with a total of 51 residents. For 2023 academic year the Department of medicine has allotted 18 positions. Please read below for our application criteria and answers to frequently asked questions.

2023 - 2024 Academic Year Application Criteria

Application Deadline

All applications for consideration must be completed in ERAS and received by December 16th.

Visas

We accept EAD and will sponsor J-1 visas only.

ECFMG Certification

We do require ECFMG certification by the end of the interview season if you are not currently a medical student.

Scores

We do not have absolute minimum requirements for board scores. However, we prefer scores of 230 on Step 2, and a CS pass on the first attempt; we do reserve the right to waive this requirement on a case by case basis, especially if Internal Medicine core rotations were successfully completed here.

Graduation Cut off

We do have a medical school graduation cut off of on or after December 16, 2022.

Letters of Recommendation

We require a minimum of three Letters of Recommendation (LORs) and a MSPE, all of which are due before December 16, 2022.

How do I apply to your program?
We only accept applications via ERAS. Please do not email us applications without applying to the program directly through ERAS, as these will not be considered.

I see that your program is located at Jersey City Medical Center but I am having trouble locating your program on ERAS. Would you be able to assist me with that?

Yes, the official name of our program is Rutgers Health/Jersey City Medical Center. Our program’s home is Jersey City Medical Center located at 355 Grand Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302.

Will you be participating in the NRMP match this year?
Yes, we will be participating in the NRMP match this year. Our NRMP number is 1390140C0.

Do you require US Clinical Experience?
We do not require US clinical experience. However, it is the opinion of the program that such experience is often a good educational opportunity and may serve as useful preparation for residency. Therefore, it is a positive aspect that will be taken into account in the context of the rest of the application.

Do you have any available opportunities for an observership or externship at your institution?
We do not offer or allow observerships or externships at our hospital.

Will I be able to set up an audition rotation?
We do not do audition rotations.

Would I be able to come back for a second interview later in the season?
No, we do not hold “second look” interviews.

How many of your current residents are IMGs?
90% of our residents are International Medical Graduates.

Will my application be filtered out if I don’t meet all of the criteria above?
It is the philosophy and practice of the Department of Medicine that the residency application is considered in its entirety. All available information is reviewed, inclusive of medical school, year of graduation, grades, clinical experience, research experience, personal statement, letters of recommendation, USMLE performance, etc. Strength in one area may compensate for relative weakness in another. We make every attempt to understand the full potential of the applicant.
