About Jersey City Medical Center

Since its inception in 1808, more than one million patients have been seen at the Jersey City Medical Center. In 1881, it became the Jersey City Charity Hospital when it moved to the site at Montgomery Street and Baldwin Avenue. It grew into a 220 bed, three story structure in 1909. On October 2, 1936, Mayor Frank Hague declared a holiday in Jersey City when President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the expansion of the hospital.

In 1954, the first four year College of Medicine and Dentistry in the State of New Jersey was established at the Medical Center. After the State of New Jersey took over the school, it continued to administer the College until the late 1960’s when an alternate site was developed in Newark. Jersey City Medical Center is a teaching affiliate and a member of America’s Essential Hospitals. It is also a major teaching affiliate of Rutgers University.

The “new” Jersey City Medical Center location on Grand Street opened its doors on May 16, 2004 in a widely publicized move from its historic but aged buildings, to a new, state of the art facility located in Jersey City’s exciting, downtown waterfront community, currently experiencing unprecedented residential and commercial development.
