Osteoporosis often develops silently over years, resulting in bones being more fragile and susceptible to breaking. Factors like aging, hormonal changes, inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake, family history and certain medications can contribute to its onset. You could have osteoporosis, or be at risk for developing it without knowing.

Early detections and treatment can help manage osteoporosis and reduce the risk of complications. Bone density testing is a safe, quick, non-invasive, painless procedure which detects the disease at its earliest stages, when treatment is most effective.

The Osteoporosis Center located at the Ambulatory Care Center, 200 South Orange Ave., Livingston, NJ, provides the most advanced diagnosis of osteoporosis in New Jersey. We perform over 8,000 bone density tests a year.

The center is equipped with two DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) scanners, which is the most advanced densitometry equipment available. Due to its accuracy, low x-ray exposure and ability to measure both hip and spine, it is considered the gold standard of bone density measurements. When having a DEXA scan it is a very quick, easy test to diagnose osteoporosis. These tests are also the only means of monitoring the success of treatment or detecting the effects of other conditions or medications that can damage the skeleton.

Our technologists are trained and certified in X-ray and bone densitometry by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). We also offer a Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA) and a Body Composition Assessment.

Comprehensive reports -- prepared by our affiliated endocrinologists who are clinical experts in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis -- include detailed patient medical history, treatment, and scores from the patient scan.

Testing your bone density how strong your bones are through a DEXA scan is the only way to know for sure if you have osteoporosis. To schedule a DEXA scan, please call 973-322-7888.

To expedite your registration, please complete this Bone Densitometry Questionnaire and bring to your appointment. Also remember, no vitamins or calcium 24 hours before scan, and it should be on the same machine as prior year for best results.
